Welcome to Minas de Alquife

Minas de Alquife S.L.U. has developed in recent months a large collection activity and technical interpretation of existing historical data mine iron Alquife (Granada) until the end of mining in 1996, from the documentary collections of the Compañía Andaluza de Minas SA. Thus, it concluded the first phase of studies sufficiently important to show the project's potential to reopen the mine, which would imply an economic revitalization of the region as well as the generation of new employment opportunities.

The region of the Marquesado is an important iron metallogenic district, where stands the site of Alquife. The iron ore mine of Alquife (Minas del Marquesado) is located in the SE of the Iberian Peninsula, in the province of Granada, about 80 km east of Granada and 100 km west of Almería, in the eastern half of Andalusia. The remains of the old mining are located in the North slope of Sierra Nevada and the southern end of the diluvial plains of the Marquesado del Zenete, consisting of 10 municipalities that occupy the southern part of the region of Guadix.

Although mining activity dating back to Roman times, and is continuous from the early twentieth century by underground mining was the Compañía Andaluza de Minas SA who managed initially by underground mining and since 1964 fully open, the site was considered one of the most important iron ore in Western Europe and the most important of the Iberian Peninsula. 1996 saw the closure of the mine due to the falling price of iron ore, the depreciation of the dollar relative to the penny and then high transport costs by rail to the port of Almeria. Alquife mine allowed the extraction of 93 million tons of ore and marketing of about 86 milion tons of iron concentrate, in some years reaching 4 million tonnes of production.
